Introduction

Studying in the United Kingdom has long been a coveted goal for many Indian students seeking quality education and international exposure. However, the financial implications can be daunting. Fortunately, numerous scholarships are available to help alleviate these costs. This article delves into some of the prominent scholarships tailored for Indian students aspiring to study in the UK in 2025.

1. GREAT Scholarships

The GREAT Scholarships program is a collaborative initiative between the British Council and the UK Government’s GREAT Britain Campaign. It offers financial support to international students, including those from India, pursuing one-year postgraduate programs in the UK. Each scholarship provides £10,000 towards tuition fees. For the academic year 2025-26, over 200 scholarships will be available across more than 70 UK universities. Special scholarships are also designated for Indian students focusing on Science and Technology or Justice and Law.

2. Chevening Scholarships

Funded by the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, Chevening Scholarships are fully funded awards for one-year master’s programs in the UK. These scholarships cover tuition, living expenses, travel, and other study-related costs. They are awarded to individuals demonstrating academic excellence and leadership potential, with an emphasis on contributing positively to their home countries upon completion.

3. Commonwealth Scholarships

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is designed for students who can make significant contributions to their home countries after studying in the UK. These scholarships cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs. They are typically awarded to students from Commonwealth countries, including India, aiming to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees.

4. University-Specific Scholarships

Several UK universities offer scholarships specifically for Indian students:

  • University of Sheffield: For the September 2025 intake, the University of Sheffield is offering 75 scholarships, each worth £10,000, covering tuition fees for postgraduate programs. Applicants must have received an offer to study at the university and meet other eligibility criteria.
  • University of Manchester: The Global Futures Scholarship is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Undergraduate students can receive £21,000, while postgraduates are eligible for £8,000 scholarships. These are awarded based on academic merit and provide a reduction in tuition fees.

5. A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded annually to English language teachers from outside the UK to study for a Master’s degree in English Language Teaching (ELT) at the University of Warwick. The program aims to enhance English language teaching skills and is highly competitive.
